Gov’t Launches ‘One Million Coders’ Drive to Anchor Ghana’s Digital Revolution

President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled Ghana’s most ambitious tech skills initiative yet—the One Million Coders Programme, a flagship move aimed at transforming Ghana into a digital powerhouse and equipping its citizens for the future of work.

Launched on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, the programme sets out to train one million Ghanaians in coding and essential digital skills, marking a major leap in the country’s journey toward building a knowledge-based economy.

“This is not just the launch of another government programme. This is a national declaration of intent—we are building the digital Ghana of tomorrow, starting today,” President Mahama declared at the ceremony.

Far from being a mere campaign pledge, Mahama emphasized that the initiative is a strategic cornerstone of his Reset Ghana Agenda, a policy framework aimed at retooling Ghana’s economy through innovation, inclusion, and sustainable digital growth.

“We are saying to the youth and to the world: Ghana is ready. The future is digital, and we will not be left behind,” he stressed.

The One Million Coders Programme is designed to democratize access to tech education, targeting Ghanaians across all backgrounds—from urban centres to underserved rural communities. Through a mix of online and in-person training modules, it aims to create a digitally literate workforce equipped for opportunities in AI, software development, data science, and cybersecurity.

President Mahama described the effort as a gateway to Ghana’s “blue economy”—a future powered by smart, tech-enabled solutions in every sector.

As Ghana positions itself to be a regional leader in digital innovation, the One Million Coders Programme is expected to attract both domestic and international tech investments, while empowering a new generation of homegrown developers, entrepreneurs, and digital problem-solvers.
