Delay in Justice Deepens Grief for Family of Slain Queen Mother Naa Gamu

The pursuit of justice for the late Lawrencia Naa Borley Nelson, affectionately known as Naa Gamu, has hit another delay, leaving her grieving family and community in prolonged uncertainty.

The Teshie Nungua District Court ‘2’ has once again adjourned the high-profile case involving her fatal shooting to May 7, 2025, following a request from prosecutors for additional time to conclude investigations. A ballistic report, expected to be a key piece of evidence in the case, has not yet been completed.

This marks the second adjournment in the matter, with a prior delay on March 26 caused by the absence of the presiding judge. The repeated postponements have sparked growing concerns among supporters and family members who say the delays are compounding their pain.

Naa Gamu, who served as the queen mother of the Ga Adangme Muslim Union, tragically lost her life after being struck in the thigh by a musket allegedly discharged during traditional rites at her enstoolment ceremony in Nungua. The incident has raised serious questions about the safety protocols surrounding the use of firearms in cultural practices.

Samuel Adjei, the man accused in connection with the shooting, remains in custody after the Accra High Court on April 9 dismissed a bail application filed by his legal team. He faces charges of murder and unlawful possession of firearms, although his plea is yet to be taken.

Meanwhile, police have stated that a duplicate docket is being prepared for submission to the Attorney General’s Department for advice on the next legal steps.

For now, Naa Gamu’s loved ones can only wait—again—for answers.

“We want justice, not just for Naa Gamu, but for every woman and every community leader who gives their all and deserves to be protected, not buried,” said one family member who spoke under condition of anonymity.

As the community mourns, many are also calling for a review of how firearms are handled during traditional ceremonies to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
