The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Majority Caucus in Parliament has distanced itself from reports suggesting that the Parliamentary Sanitation Committee sought to interfere in the Youth Employment Agency’s (YEA) sanitation contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited.
In a statement issued by Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Mahama Ayariga, the Caucus firmly stated that no official mandate had been given to any committee member to meddle in the YEA’s contractual affairs.
“The Chairman of the Committee has reported to me that, contrary to media speculation, neither he nor any member has attempted to interfere in the YEA’s work concerning the Zoomlion contract,” Ayariga clarified.
He stressed that any remarks from individual members defending Zoomlion’s position should be disregarded by the public and the YEA alike, adding that such comments do not represent the stance of the Committee or Parliament as a whole.
The Majority Leader further warned Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) against succumbing to pressure or intimidation to sign sanitation deals with particular companies, reiterating that local governments retain autonomy over their contracts following reforms under former President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.
Ayariga reaffirmed Parliament’s dedication to protecting the independence of the Assemblies and upholding transparent decision-making in sanitation and other service delivery sectors.
