In a significant leadership shake-up, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced the reassignment of 13 senior programme managers and district directors, in what it describes as a strategic effort to reinvigorate health sector leadership and align it with the country’s evolving healthcare needs.
Among the high-profile figures affected by the nationwide restructuring are Dr. Keziah Malm, head of the National Malaria Elimination Programme, Dr. Kwame Amponsa-Achiano of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), and Dr. Stephen Ayisi Addo, who has long led Ghana’s AIDS Control Programme.
The reshuffle, effective May 19, 2025, was disclosed in an official circular signed by Acting Director-General of the GHS, Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea. The letter, addressed to divisional and regional directors, frames the reassignments as part of a broader vision to enhance operational efficiency and re-energize key health programmes amid growing public health demands.
While the circular did not specify the incoming roles of the affected officers, it assured that details of their new assignments would be communicated shortly.
“This re-alignment seeks to bring fresh energy and innovation into critical programme areas and ensure that the GHS is well-positioned to meet both persistent and emerging health challenges,” the statement noted.
The move represents one of the most comprehensive leadership overhauls in recent GHS history, and signals the agency’s intent to recalibrate its internal structures in response to dynamic national and global health priorities, including infectious disease control, immunization efforts, and health system resilience.
