Afenyo-Markin Slams Mahama’s NDC Over Alleged Power Grab and Economic Strain

Deputy Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has launched a sharp critique of former President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing them of plotting to extend Mahama’s presidency through constitutional manipulation.

Speaking on at a press conference to address Mahama’s performance in his first 120 days, Afenyo Markin said that certain factions within the NDC are pushing for a “third term” agenda, disregarding promises for governance and constitutional reform.

He suggested that recent attacks on the Chief Justice were part of a broader scheme to clear the path for these ambitions.

“We are aware of a sinister and diabolical plot to tighten their present grip on power and prolong Mahama’s days in office,” he said. “But we, the minority today, vow to end this government. They will never have their way. Ghana is not a monarchy, and we will not let one man distort our constitution for his unchecked power.”

Afenyo-Markin also took aim at the NDC’s internal struggles, claiming that ongoing succession battles within the party are distracting from effective governance. “The hawks in the NDC who are so power drunk, pushing this third-term agenda, are hurting the country,” he added.

Turning his attention to the economy, Afenyo-Markin accused the Mahama administration of betraying the private sector, despite early promises to foster a business-friendly environment.

“On the day of his inauguration, the president called on business leaders to help shape an environment where creativity thrives. But 120 days in, that appeal has curdled into betrayal,” he said, criticizing the government for failing to pay contractors and suppliers, forcing many businesses to close or lay off workers.

He further blasted the government over unfulfilled promises to reduce import duties and abolish the COVID-19 health levy, arguing that these broken promises have compounded the financial strain on ordinary Ghanaians.

“The president pledged to implement a 24-hour economy to attract investment and stimulate local industries, but instead, his administration has abandoned critical programs like the 1D1F initiative, betraying the industrialization dreams of this nation,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

The Deputy Majority Leader ended with a call for vigilance, urging Ghanaians to resist what he described as the government’s “economic vandalism masquerading as governance.”
