Community Tensions Delay Bole MCE Confirmation Amid Youth Protests

The confirmation of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee for the Bole District in the Savannah Region has been rescheduled to Monday, May 12, following rising tensions and youth protests that disrupted the originally planned process.

The decision comes after angry demonstrations in Bole on Friday, May 9, where youth groups took to the streets, burning tyres and waving placards to express their dissatisfaction with the nominee. The protests, which raised security concerns, reflect the broader frustrations of a community demanding more inclusive local governance.

Communication Gaps Fuel Tensions

Savannah Regional Minister, Salisu Be-Awuribi, sought to clarify the situation during an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Friday. He emphasized that no formal Assembly gathering had been scheduled for May 9, despite widespread assumptions to the contrary.

“We first proposed the 7th of May as the date for the confirmation, but after further dialogue and consultations, it became clear that more time was needed to engage all stakeholders, so we moved it to Monday, 12 May,” Be-Awuribi explained.

He noted that the delay was partly due to a planned two-day protest by the youth, who had formally notified the Ghana Police Service of their intention to demonstrate on Tuesday and Wednesday of the same week. This, he suggested, influenced the decision to postpone the confirmation to avoid further escalation.

Navigating Local Politics and Youth Discontent

The Minister stressed that the decision to reschedule was not a response to pressure but a practical step to ensure a smooth and orderly confirmation process.

“No Assembly Member was gathering for the confirmation today. The Presiding Member initially set the date for Wednesday, but after assessing the situation, we advised a further rescheduling to Monday, May 12,” he clarified.

He further expressed optimism that the situation would be resolved, pointing out that Bole is the only district in the Savannah Region yet to confirm its MCE. “Savannah has seven districts, and we have had all six confirmed. It is only Bole that is outstanding. By the grace of God, when we go on Monday, the Assembly Members will speak,” he added.

A Call for Constructive Dialogue

The unfolding situation in Bole underscores the complex dynamics of local governance, where political appointments can become flashpoints for broader community frustrations. As the confirmation date approaches, stakeholders are calling for calm and constructive dialogue to address the underlying concerns of the youth and ensure a peaceful resolution.
