Ghana has taken a bold step towards modernising its passport acquisition process with the launch of a nationwide home delivery service for chip-embedded biometric passports.
The initiative, led by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, aims to ease the burden on citizens by eliminating the need to return to Passport Application Centres (PACs) to collect their passports.
The innovative service, rolled out in collaboration with Ghana Post, allows Ghanaians to receive their passports at their doorsteps within days of application.
Reflecting on the initiative, Mr. Ablakwa took to Facebook, saying, “It was an amazing experience joining Ghana Post to deliver our new chip-embedded passports to Ghanaians who applied less than two weeks ago. The stress of returning to PACs to pick up passports is no more.”
This week alone, more than 5,000 passports are set to be delivered across all 16 regions, signalling a significant shift in how public services are accessed in the country.
Mr. Ablakwa noted that the service is part of a broader strategy to tackle the longstanding issue of uncollected passports, a challenge he inherited upon taking office.
“Remember, I inherited over 70,000 uncollected passports. With this intervention, we have ended the phenomenon of uncollected passports due to frustration and inconvenience,” he remarked.
This home delivery initiative forms a key part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration’s digital transformation agenda, designed to improve efficiency, reduce backlogs, and enhance the overall experience for Ghanaians seeking travel documents.
