GCAA Marks 39 Years of Aviation Excellence, Eyes Technology-Driven Future

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has reaffirmed its commitment to technological advancement and innovation as it seeks to strengthen air traffic management and enhance the safety of the country’s airspace.

Speaking at the GCAA’s 39th Anniversary and Awards Ceremony in Accra, the Acting Director-General, Reverend Stephen Arthur, highlighted ongoing investments in modern infrastructure, including the construction of a state-of-the-art Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, as part of the Authority’s strategic vision for the future.

“The new ATC tower, set for completion by the end of 2026, will be equipped with cutting-edge technology, putting Ghana on par with the world’s leading aviation hubs,” Rev. Arthur said, emphasizing the importance of keeping pace with global standards.

The GCAA, which began as a unit within the Public Works Department in 1930 and gained departmental status in 1953, became an autonomous entity in 1986 under PNDC Law 151. Over the past 39 years, it has evolved into a critical pillar of Ghana’s transportation infrastructure, providing air traffic management, regulatory oversight, and aerodrome management.

Reflecting on the Authority’s achievements, Rev. Arthur praised the GCAA’s strict adherence to International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards, which he said had propelled Ghana to prominence as a key player in the global aviation sector.

“Our unwavering commitment to safety and excellence has transformed Ghana’s aviation sector into a critical driver of economic growth, earning us local and international recognition,” he noted.

However, he cautioned that maintaining this momentum would require continued collaboration, unity, and innovation within the GCAA workforce.

“Unity is strength, and where there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved,” Rev. Arthur said, urging staff to align themselves with the government’s vision of establishing Ghana as a leading aviation hub in West Africa.

As part of this vision, the GCAA aims to modernize its operations and adopt emerging technologies to meet the demands of a rapidly changing industry.

John Mmeb Kunyan Wumborti, Acting Commissioner of the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau (AIB), commended the GCAA for its decades-long commitment to safety and resilience, while Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, Managing Director of the Ghana Airport Company Limited, called for stronger collaboration between the two institutions to foster sector growth.

Rev. Arthur concluded his address with a pledge to improve the working conditions of GCAA staff, promising that no one would be left behind as the Authority moves toward a more technologically advanced and globally competitive future.
