The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has ramped up efforts to enhance tax compliance and digital literacy among businesses with a stakeholder engagement workshop focused on the Growth and Sustainability Levy (GSL) and its online filing system.
Held as part of GRA’s Tax and Good Governance Month, the event brought together industry players from various sectors to demystify the GSL and equip taxpayers with the necessary tools to meet quarterly filing obligations through the GRA’s digital platforms.
Speaking at the event, Assistant Commissioner Joseph Asare, Accra East Area Director, emphasized the growing role of digital resources in improving compliance. He attributed recent gains in voluntary tax adherence to sustained education campaigns and media support, affirming GRA’s commitment to expanding taxpayer outreach and support services.
“Tax compliance is improving, but we’re not stopping there,” Mr. Asare stated. “We will intensify education, especially in areas where compliance gaps persist, ensuring no business is left behind in this digital shift.”
Mrs. Lydia Owusu-Banahene, Office Manager at the Taxpayer Service Centre in Tema, addressed the broader economic context, noting how COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine conflict have strained businesses and government finances alike. She explained that the GSL is a government response to these pressures, urging companies to fulfill their tax duties and take advantage of the extended implementation period to 2028.
Highlighting the GRA’s support mechanisms, she pointed to relationship officers who are available to assist businesses with filing queries and tax challenges.
The session also featured a practical demonstration by GRA official Mr. Martin Opoku Abankwah, who walked attendees through the online portal. He explained the levy’s classification system (Categories A, B, and C), how to calculate applicable rates, and how to file quarterly returns digitally.
With growing emphasis on digital transformation and transparency in Ghana’s tax administration, the GRA is positioning technology as a key driver in building a more efficient and inclusive tax ecosystem.
