Global Oil and Gold Markets Hold Key to Cedi’s Strength – Swift Petrotrade CEO

The Ghanaian cedi could appreciate significantly against the US dollar — potentially trading at GH₵8 to $1 — if global geopolitical shifts realign commodity markets, according to Prince Ellis Antsroe, CEO of Swift Petrotrade Group.

In a wide-ranging interview with Myjoyonline.com, Antsroe pointed to ongoing negotiations surrounding US sanctions on Iran as a critical factor that could reshape global oil and gold markets, with ripple effects reaching Ghana’s economy and currency strength.

Oil Prices May Plunge if Iran Sanctions Lifted
Antsroe believes a lifting of US sanctions on Iran could cause crude oil prices to tumble drastically, possibly falling to as low as $40 per barrel or even lower. This would ease import costs for oil-reliant countries like Ghana, potentially strengthening the cedi through reduced demand for foreign exchange to purchase petroleum products.

“A sharp decline in global oil prices would lower Ghana’s import bill significantly, which supports currency stability,” he said.

Gold Could Surge Amid Oil Slump
At the same time, a crash in oil prices could boost investor appetite for safe-haven assets, notably gold. Antsroe predicts that gold prices could soar to around $3,500 per ounce — equivalent to roughly $123,500 per kilogram — due to increased global demand.

Given Ghana’s position as a leading gold exporter, such a development would translate into a major influx of US dollars into the economy.

“If this scenario plays out and Ghana’s imports remain steady, we could see a substantial appreciation of the cedi, potentially reaching GH₵8 to the dollar,” Antsroe said. “The strength of the currency will hinge on how long these commodity price trends persist.”

Geopolitical Risks Cloud Forecast
However, he warned that this optimistic trajectory is threatened by rising tensions in the Middle East. Citing US intelligence and reports from CNN, Antsroe referenced the possibility of an Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear facilities, a move that could derail negotiations and destabilize the region.

Such a development would drive oil prices upward again and inject volatility into global markets — complicating Ghana’s economic outlook. Still, Antsroe noted that while oil prices might surge, gold may remain resilient due to ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.

“We may not see a major dip in gold prices because of the fear and uncertainty that dominate such geopolitical climates,” he said.

Ghana’s Economic Fortunes Tied to Global Events
Reflecting on the wide-reaching impact of international developments on Ghana’s economy, Antsroe offered a sobering insight: “Looking at these scenarios, it makes one wonder if Ghana’s economic success is now inextricably linked to global power dynamics.”

As Ghana continues to navigate economic recovery and currency fluctuations, the nation’s reliance on commodity exports and sensitivity to global shocks remain central to its financial narrative — a reality underscored by the CEO’s remarks.
