A new academic award scheme has been unveiled at the 60th anniversary celebration of Abor Senior High School (ABORSCO), aimed at motivating students to strive for higher academic achievement and leadership.
The initiative, dubbed the “Bernard Ahiafor Excellence Award,” was announced by Dr. Senanu Kwasi Djokoto, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), during the anniversary event on Saturday.
Under the scheme, the top three performing students in each year group — Senior High School One, Two and Three — will be recognised annually, with scholarships earmarked for outstanding final-year students. Dr. Djokoto also donated GH¢10,000 to support the school’s anniversary activities.
Explaining the motivation behind the initiative, Dr. Djokoto said the school’s anthem and long-standing tradition of producing distinguished personalities inspired him to give back. He noted that ABORSCO has nurtured professors, heads of institutions and national leaders, including the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
He urged students to remain focused and disciplined, stressing that delayed gratification remains a key ingredient for long-term success. According to him, the difference between those who succeed and those who fall short often lies in their ability to prioritise education over short-term pleasures.
The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Akatsi South, Bernard Ahiafor, endorsed the award scheme and pledged his full backing. He further proposed expanding the initiative to include a fourth category to honour the overall best female student each year.
The Excellence Award forms part of broader efforts to sustain ABORSCO’s academic legacy and inspire students to aim higher as the school looks ahead to its 75th anniversary milestone.
