Accountants Who Ignore AI Risk Becoming Obsolete — BoG Advisor Warns

Dr John Kwabena Kwakye, Advisor to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, has warned that accountants who fail to embrace Artificial Intelligence risk becoming irrelevant in a rapidly evolving global economy driven by technology and data.

Speaking at the opening of the 2026 Annual Conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana in Ho, Dr Kwakye said the accounting profession was undergoing a major transformation as automation, predictive analytics and AI-powered compliance systems reshape financial management worldwide.

“AI will not replace accountants, but accountants who leverage AI will replace those who do not,” he stated.

Addressing accountants, auditors, regulators, policymakers and academics at the conference, Dr Kwakye explained that technological advancement and globalisation had made economies more interconnected and vulnerable to global financial developments, increasing the importance of professional accountants in safeguarding economic stability.

According to him, modern accounting professionals are no longer expected to function merely as traditional record keepers but as strategic advisors capable of identifying risks, improving decision-making processes and detecting fraud in real time through technology-driven systems.

He noted that the integration of AI and digital financial tools could significantly improve efficiency, transparency and accountability while supporting Ghana’s ambition to build a resilient and competitive digital economy.

Despite the opportunities presented by technology, Dr Kwakye cautioned that innovation alone cannot guarantee sustainable economic growth without strong ethical leadership and accountability systems.

“Integrity is the human algorithm that ensures growth remains inclusive, transparent and accountable,” he stressed.

He emphasised that the credibility of accountants remains rooted in professional ethics, trust and responsibility, noting that the signature of an accountant on financial statements must continue to represent integrity and public confidence.

The BoG Advisor warned that weak governance systems and poor accountability often fuel corruption, illicit financial flows and the misuse of public resources that should otherwise support critical sectors such as education, healthcare and infrastructure development.

According to him, countries with strong institutions and transparent governance structures are more likely to attract foreign direct investment and maintain long-term economic stability.

Dr Kwakye cited countries such as Norway, Singapore, Mauritius, Botswana and Rwanda as examples of nations that have built resilient economies through transparency, prudent financial management and ethical governance.

He also highlighted the increasing relevance of sustainability reporting standards such as IFRS S1 and IFRS S2, describing them as critical requirements for attracting international investment and strengthening corporate governance systems.

Dr Kwakye urged accountants to strengthen anti-corruption efforts, uphold professional ethics and support reforms aimed at promoting accountability and transparency across both public and private institutions.

“As accountants, you are not merely number crunchers; you are architects of economic resilience and guardians of financial integrity,” he said.

The conference was held under the theme: “Building Strong and Sustainable Economies: Standards, Integrity and Accountability.”
