Accra-Kumasi Expressway Nears Construction as 170km Corridor Is Cleared

The proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway has moved closer to the construction phase after Ghana Armed Forces engineers cleared 170 kilometres of the 176-kilometre project corridor, leaving only six kilometres to be completed.

The development comes as Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson assures that the government will secure the full financing for the major road project by the end of 2026 without resorting to additional borrowing.

Dr Forson disclosed that US$1.7 billion had already been secured for the project and placed in an account at the Bank of Ghana pending the commencement of construction.

“By the end of this year, the full funding for the transformational Accra-Kumasi Expressway will be ready,” he said during the 2026 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review.

He stressed that the government would not borrow to finance the project.

“For the avoidance of doubt, not a single pesewa will be borrowed for this project,” he stated.

The financing assurance coincides with significant progress on the preparatory works for the expressway, particularly the clearing of the right of way by military engineers.

In an update on Thursday, September 3, the Ghana Armed Forces announced that its engineering team had completed 170 kilometres of the 176-kilometre corridor and was advancing towards Sawua, with only six kilometres remaining.

“The finish line is in sight. Out of 176 kilometres of challenging terrain, just 6 KM REMAIN!” the Armed Forces said.

The corridor-clearing exercise was initiated during Dr Forson’s tenure as Acting Minister for Defence to establish the required right of way and prepare the route for construction.

The Finance Minister congratulated the military engineering team for its progress, describing the achievement as an important step towards the actual commencement of the project.

“Hearty congratulations to our indefatigable army on a stellar job,” he said.

The latest progress marks a major improvement over the 89.5 kilometres cleared as of June 25, 2026, representing 50.9 percent of the entire corridor at the time.

The clearing exercise was initially expected to be completed within 20 weeks.

Once completed, the six-lane, bidirectional expressway is expected to improve connectivity between Accra and Kumasi, Ghana’s two largest cities, while reducing travel times, easing congestion and facilitating the movement of goods and people.

The project is also expected to stimulate economic activity along the Accra-Kumasi corridor by improving road infrastructure and connectivity between communities and commercial centres.

With only six kilometres of the corridor left to clear and the government insisting that the project will be financed without new borrowing, attention is now shifting towards securing the remaining funds and moving from preparatory works to full-scale construction.
