The Ada East District Assembly has confirmed that tensions surrounding the arrest of the Bedeku Electoral Area Assembly Member over the clearing of a fallen tree have been peacefully resolved.
According to the Presiding Member, Mr Philip Tetteh Atchia, the dispute involving the assembly member, the Forestry Commission, and a contractor has been settled after a series of engagements that led to all parties agreeing to withdraw the matter from police processes.
He explained that the disagreement stemmed from the removal of a tree that had fallen near Korlekorpey Junction following a heavy rainstorm on March 29, 2026. The fallen tree had blocked the road and raised safety concerns among residents and motorists.
Mr Abraham Teye Korley, the assembly member for Bedeku, was later invited and arrested by the Ada Divisional Police Command following misunderstandings over the clearing of the obstruction.
Mr Atchia said he intervened after being informed of the incident through the District Chief Executive, adding that he was concerned the matter had escalated to law enforcement instead of being handled administratively.
“I was disturbed when I heard about the incident, so I quickly went to the police station to intervene. That is not the way to handle such matters,” he stated.
He noted that he convened a meeting with all stakeholders to clarify the circumstances and restore calm, stressing that assembly procedures require that any arrest or formal engagement involving an assembly member be communicated through the Presiding Member.
While acknowledging that this protocol was not followed, he also defended the assembly member’s actions, describing them as motivated by public safety concerns.
Mr Atchia confirmed that the matter had now been amicably resolved, with all parties agreeing to move forward in peace.
For his part, Mr Korley said he was awaiting official confirmation of the withdrawal of the case, maintaining that his actions were purely in the interest of residents and road users.
“I acted in the interest of the community and road users, not for personal gain,” he said, expressing appreciation to those who supported him during the incident.
He added that the episode had reinforced the importance of accountability and public service, urging officials to always act in the best interest of the communities they serve.
