Former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum has challenged claims that more than 100,000 students were left without senior high school placement under the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) in 2024.
Dr Adutwum said the figure was misleading because it failed to distinguish between students who received automatic placement and those who were required to complete the self-placement process.
He made the clarification during a one-on-one interview on Peace FM’s morning programme, Kokrokoo, after responding to a text message on the issue.
“It’s not true that over 100,000 students didn’t get placement in 2024 when I was the Minister. There’s a difference between automatic placement and self-placement,” he said.
According to the former minister, the existence of students who did not receive automatic placement should not necessarily be interpreted as meaning they were denied access to senior high school education.
He said the CSSPS process included self-placement as an avenue for eligible students who were not automatically matched with one of their selected schools.
Dr Adutwum’s comments come amid renewed debate over the performance of the CSSPS and the ability of Ghana’s senior high schools to accommodate growing numbers of qualified students.
