The President of the Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA), Charles Osei Asibey, has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Kirsty Coventry on her historic election as the 10th President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
In a statement shared with the Ghana News Agency, Osei Asibey described Coventry’s victory as a groundbreaking moment for the global Olympic movement.
“This is a historic milestone,” he remarked. “Kirsty Coventry’s election as the first woman, first African, and youngest person to lead the IOC is truly inspiring. We are excited to see a distinguished athlete of her caliber take on this role.”
Coventry, a former Olympic champion and an advocate for youth development and women’s empowerment, secured the IOC Presidency at the IOC Session in Greece. Her leadership is expected to bring fresh perspectives and transformative policies to the world’s premier sporting organization.
Osei Asibey expressed confidence in her ability to drive innovation and inclusivity within the IOC, emphasizing that her background as a world-class athlete gives her a deep understanding of sports governance.
“We are optimistic that under her leadership, the Olympic movement will continue to grow, becoming even more inclusive and impactful,” he stated.
The AFA President also highlighted his hopes that Coventry’s tenure could create new opportunities for Armwrestling on the global stage.
“We look forward to engaging with President-elect Coventry and the IOC to explore ways to expand Armwrestling’s presence in Africa and beyond,” he said.
As the governing body for Armwrestling in Africa, AFA remains committed to developing talent and ensuring the sport’s growth across the continent. With Coventry at the helm of the IOC, the African sporting community is eager to see how her leadership will reshape the future of Olympic sports.
