Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has sharply criticized the Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Raymond Archer, over what he described as evasive and partisan conduct in the agency’s handling of political matters—particularly the recent arrest of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Leading a Minority Caucus protest at EOCO’s headquarters, Afenyo-Markin expressed deep concerns about the agency’s reluctance to engage in transparent communication, warning that such behavior risks eroding public trust and inflaming political tensions.
In a direct message to the EOCO boss, Afenyo-Markin stated: “Mr. Raymond Archer will not be Executive Director of EOCO forever. Someday, one day, he will not be there.” His remarks underscored a broader frustration with what he described as bureaucratic stalling and dismissive responses from EOCO officials.
He accused the agency of avoiding meaningful engagement: “You call them, they won’t even respond. You try to engage them, they will say, OK. The next moment, they will be tossing you.”
While affirming the NPP’s dedication to peaceful and lawful dialogue, Afenyo-Markin warned against using legal institutions as tools for political persecution. “There’s a line between justice and persecution,” he said, adding that such missteps could damage the credibility of state institutions.
The Minority Leader’s comments come at a time of heightened political sensitivity, following the controversial detention of Chairman Wontumi—a move many within the NPP view as politically motivated.
