President John Dramani Mahama has urged the international community to redefine its relationship with Africa by focusing on investment, industrialisation, and shared prosperity rather than aid and sympathy.
Addressing participants at the 12th Africa Debate, the President said Africa was increasingly positioning itself as a destination for business, innovation, and economic growth, supported by initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Mr. Mahama noted that despite global economic challenges, African economies continue to show resilience and remain among the fastest-growing in the world. He stressed that the continent’s future should be built on value addition, technology transfer, infrastructure development, and skills enhancement.
According to him, Africa must move beyond its traditional role as a supplier of raw materials and focus on creating value through industrialisation and stronger regional trade.
He said the AfCFTA offers a unique opportunity to unlock economic transformation by expanding intra-African trade, attracting investment, and promoting industrial growth across the continent.
The President also highlighted Ghana as an example of how purposeful leadership, reforms, and national commitment can drive meaningful transformation and sustainable development.
Mr. Mahama maintained that Africa’s progress is already underway and called for partnerships that recognise the continent’s economic potential and contribute to long-term prosperity for both Africa and the global community.
