Music sensation Akwaboah has addressed the backlash sparked by a recent photo from his wedding anniversary, revealing the real story behind his tired appearance and tackling the wave of online criticism.
Speaking to Nana Romeo on Okay FM, the Highlife star explained that his weary look was simply the result of an exhausting day filled with travel and performances. After a morning departure from Accra to Kwahu and back, with barely any rest in between, he had only an hour’s sleep before attending church with his wife — where the now-famous photo was taken.
“I knew Ghanaians would comment on the picture, so I made sure my wife was okay. The criticism came at me, but not her,” Akwaboah said. He described how social media users zoomed in on his fatigued face and drew wild, often hurtful conclusions about his happiness and marriage.
Despite the negativity, Akwaboah remains grounded, pointing to the privilege of doing what he loves for a living and the support of his wife. “People throw rocks at things that shine,” he reflected, lamenting the “crab mentality” that often fuels such attacks.
He shared advice on handling cyberbullying, urging resilience in the face of baseless insults. “Sometimes, you allow them to do what they have to do, and you do what you have to do,” he said. For Akwaboah, staying mentally strong and focusing on providing for his family helps him rise above the negativity.
Though the trolling over his looks was painful, the artist embraced the experience with a proverb: “The one wearing the ornate hat is resented.” He remains unshaken, encouraging others to develop the same mental toughness as he continues to shine in the spotlight.
