Residents of Akyem Oda in the Eastern Region, along with former General Secretary of the Ghana Association of Assembly Members (GAAM), Mr. Dennis Obeng Agyei, have welcomed President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to providing financial support for assembly members.
In his recent State of the Nation Address, President Mahama pledged that his government would offer financial assistance to assembly members to help them effectively carry out their duties at the local level. This promise has been met with optimism from both community members and local governance advocates, who believe it will strengthen grassroots development.
Mr. Obeng Agyei, a founding member of GAAM, has been a vocal advocate for financial support for assembly members. Prior to the 2024 elections, he led a delegation to engage with political leaders, urging them to prioritize the welfare of assembly members. Now, he sees Mahama’s pledge as a step in the right direction.
Speaking to the media, he praised the president’s commitment but urged the government to ensure that the support is distributed fairly, without political bias. He emphasized that assembly members, regardless of their party affiliations, should have equal access to the financial assistance to enable them to serve their communities effectively.
Meanwhile, residents of various electoral areas in the Akyem Oda constituency have also expressed their support for the initiative. They believe that empowering assembly members financially will enhance development projects and improve governance at the local level.
As the government moves forward with this promise, stakeholders are eager to see how the policy will be implemented to ensure accountability and fairness in resource distribution.
