A violent rainstorm accompanied by strong winds has swept through Apolonia in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, leaving a trail of destruction affecting homes, businesses and school infrastructure.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 at about 1:40 p.m., caused extensive damage after roofing sheets were ripped off buildings, exposing residents to the elements and disrupting normal activities in the community.
More than 10 people, including a two-year-old child, sustained injuries during the storm. They are currently receiving treatment at nearby health facilities and are reported to be responding positively.
Assembly Member for the area, Dennis Tettey, described the situation as severe, noting that several families have been displaced and left without shelter following the incident.
He clarified that although earlier reports suggested a possible death, no fatalities have been recorded, adding that the affected individual is receiving medical care.
According to him, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other relevant agencies have been notified and are expected to provide urgent relief and support to victims.
Municipal authorities have begun preliminary assessments, which indicate significant structural damage to residential and commercial properties, as well as parts of school buildings in the area.
The Kpone-Katamanso Municipal NADMO Coordinator, Abraham Tetteh, confirmed the deployment of a response team to evaluate the extent of the destruction.
He said the situation may require additional emergency support and confirmed that the Municipal Chief Executive has been informed and is expected to visit the affected community.
Residents are appealing for immediate assistance from government agencies, humanitarian organisations and individuals as recovery efforts begin.
