As ride-hailing grows, trust becomes its most valuable currency

Every ride begins with a decision to trust. Whether it is a professional heading to work, a student returning home after lectures, or a family travelling across the city, millions of journeys now depend on digital mobility platforms every year. As ride-hailing becomes part of everyday life in Ghana, one issue has become just as important as affordability and convenience: safety.

The convenience is real, but trust is the foundation of every successful mobility platform. People are not simply booking a vehicle; they are trusting a driver, a technology platform, and the systems designed to protect them from the moment they request a ride until they reach their destination.

The growth of digital mobility mirrors a broader shift in how Ghanaians consume services. Just as banking, shopping and food delivery have become increasingly digital, transport is following the same path. Consumers now expect speed, convenience and transparency, but above all, they expect to feel safe.

This shift is supported by Ghana’s growing digital ecosystem. According to DataReportal, Ghana recorded 26.3 million individuals using the internet at the end of 2025 74.6% penetration rate.

A growing sector, growing responsibility

Ride-hailing has changed urban mobility in Ghana by making transportation more accessible, predictable and convenient. As more people embrace digital mobility, safety can no longer be viewed as a feature that exists only when something goes wrong. It must be embedded into every stage of the journey.

The demand for digital mobility is even expected to continue rising as Statista Research Department, 2025 projects that Ghana’s ride-hailing market will reach a figure of 6.6 million by 2030.

This is not just unique to Ghana, around the world, safety has become one of the defining issues for digital mobility platforms. As adoption increases, public expectations have also evolved. Riders want greater transparency, stronger accountability and faster responses when incidents occur. For mobility platforms, investing in safety is no longer simply about compliance. It has become a competitive advantage and one of the strongest drivers of public trust.

Safety is a shared responsibility

Technology has transformed how people move, but no platform, regardless of how advanced it is, can make every journey safe on its own.

Safety is built through partnership. Platforms, drivers and riders each have an important role to play. When all three take responsibility, every journey becomes safer.

For riders, that responsibility starts before the trip begins. Confirm the driver’s name, photo, and licence plate number against what the app shows you. If the details do not match, do not get into the vehicle. When travelling late at night or to an unfamiliar area, share your live trip with a friend or family member using the app’s trip sharing feature.

During the trip, sitting in the back seat is a good choice for better safety, more personal space, and easier exiting. Avoid sharing personal information with a driver you do not know. If at any point during a journey you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, use the app’s in-trip safety tools, and if necessary, ask the driver to stop in a well-lit, public place.

After every trip, leave a rating and be honest. Feedback is not optional. It is how platforms maintain standards and how drivers with genuine problems get flagged before they become serious ones. If something concerns you, report it.

Drivers also have an equally important responsibility. A calm, focused driver who respects speed limits, obeys traffic regulations, and communicates clearly is already one of the safest drivers on the road. Avoiding fatigue is highly important. Fatigue is one of the leading contributors to road accidents in Ghana, and no trip is worth the risk it introduces.

Drivers should also familiarise themselves with the safety tools available to them and use them whenever they feel threatened or uncomfortable.

How technology is closing the safety gap

Safety technology has emerged over the past decade. Now, rather than responding after incidents occur, mobility platforms are using technology to prevent risks before they escalate.

At Bolt, features such as our Emergency Assist gives riders and drivers the ability to contact Bolt’s safety emergency team quickly during a trip. One press initiates the process, allowing the Bolt safety team to access relevant trip information and provide timely support when needed.

The Audio Trip Recording is another layer of protection as it records the audio environment inside the vehicle during a trip whenever activated. Where necessary, this recorded file can be shared with the Bolt team as evidence to enhance safety and assist us and the local authorities in resolving potential disputes.

Other in-app safety features like trip sharing, pickup codes and predictive monitoring tools are designed to create multiple layers of protection before, during and after every journey.

Bolt’s driver onboarding process also requires background verification before any driver goes live on the platform.

A continuous commitment to safety

Ghana’s digital mobility sector will continue to grow. More people will enter the market, more drivers will join platforms, and more journeys will take place across cities that are still developing their infrastructure. That trajectory makes the safety conversation more urgent, not less.

Bolt’s position is simple: we see safety as a continuous commitment, and we are committed to investing in technology, driver education, platform improvements, and stakeholder engagement because trust must be earned every day.

As digital mobility continues to grow across Ghana, our collective goal should extend beyond making transport more convenient to ensuring every passenger feels confident requesting a ride and every driver feels supported while providing one.

The goal is a continuous commitment. A culture where safety is not an afterthought but the first question asked before every trip begins.
