The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into an accidental shooting at Adventist Senior High School in Kumasi on Friday, April 4, around noon. The incident involved a 16-year-old student who brought a locally manufactured pistol to school and accidentally discharged the weapon, injuring another student.
According to the police, the student, whose identity has been withheld, brought the gun to school with the intention of showing it to a classmate. During the exchange, the firearm went off, hitting another student in the process. The injured student was immediately taken to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) where he received treatment and is currently in stable condition.
The suspect has been arrested, and a spent cartridge was recovered at the scene as evidence. During questioning, the young boy admitted to taking the gun from his father’s bedroom without his father’s knowledge. Authorities are now working to locate and question the father in connection with the incident.
This shooting has raised serious concerns over gun safety and access to firearms, particularly among minors, as investigations continue to determine how the weapon ended up in the hands of the teenager. The police have assured the public that they are pursuing all avenues to ensure accountability and safety for the school community.
