The Assembly Member for Kodjonya Electoral Area in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality, Mr. Ebenezer Korley Agudey, has called for heightened fire safety awareness following a tragic incident that claimed the lives of a couple in the community.
The fatal fire, which occurred at Kodjonya, a suburb of Odumase-Krobo, is believed to have been triggered when petrol used to treat a bedbug infestation came into contact with an electrical source. The incident has left residents in shock and mourning.
Mr. Agudey stressed the urgent need for public education on safe household practices, warning against the use of flammable substances such as petrol for pest control. He urged residents to adopt safer alternatives and exercise caution to prevent avoidable disasters.
He also reinforced calls by the Ghana National Fire Service for property owners to ensure that buildings are equipped with accessible emergency exits, noting that such measures could significantly reduce casualties during fire outbreaks.
While addressing the aftermath of the incident, Mr. Agudey acknowledged the role of the media in promoting public safety. He commended the Ghana News Agency and its correspondent, Mr. Kamal Ahmed, for their swift reportage, noting that timely coverage helps raise awareness and attract institutional response in emergency situations.
According to him, accurate and prompt reporting of such tragedies plays a critical role in educating the public and mobilizing support to prevent future occurrences. He emphasized that the media remains an essential partner in community development and crisis response.
Mr. Agudey concluded by calling for stronger collaboration among residents, authorities, and stakeholders to prioritise fire safety education and prevent similar incidents in the future.
