The Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipal Assembly has officially launched the National Apprenticeship Program (NAP) in the municipality, distributing sewing machines to kickstart skills training for local youth.
A total of 36 beneficiaries received equipment to support their vocational training: 30 fashion design apprentices were each given a hand sewing machine, while six master craft persons also received machines to facilitate the training program. The equipment, valued at GHS 220,000, marks the start of a four-year pilot phase of the NAP in the area.
Speaking after the distribution, the Municipal Chief Executive, Wisdom Osei Boamah, urged beneficiaries to use the machines responsibly to ensure the success of the program. He noted that the pilot phase would determine the potential for expanding the initiative to benefit more young people across the municipality.
“Your success or failure at this pilot stage will have a vital impact on the program, especially in our Municipality,” Mr. Boamah said.
The program, part of President John Dramani Mahama’s government agenda on job creation, will provide apprentices with financial support during training, as well as start-up capital to establish their own enterprises afterward. Successful participants will also receive certification from the Commission on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET) upon completion.
Patrick Opoku Fofie, Ashanti Regional Coordinator of the NAP, praised the Assembly for registering the highest number of apprentices in the region and called for collaboration among master craft persons, parents, guardians, and local authorities to ensure the program’s success.
He further encouraged youth from other vocational trades to register, emphasizing that the program is not limited to tailors, dressmakers, and hairdressers. Trades such as mobile phone repair, television and radio repair, carpentry, and other skills are also eligible for the initiative.
The launch signals a concerted effort by local authorities and stakeholders to equip young people with practical skills that can create employment opportunities and foster entrepreneurship within the Ashanti Region.
