Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren remains confident in Ghana’s chances at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) despite the team’s 1-0 defeat to Cameroon, insisting that improved finishing could change the course of their tournament.
Ghana dominated large periods of the Group D encounter on Sunday and created several clear scoring opportunities but were unable to convert them into goals.
Cameroon secured victory through Marie Gisele Ngah Manga’s first-half penalty, leaving the Black Queens to reflect on missed chances.
The Queens threatened through Doris Boaduwaa, Portia Boakye and Evelyn Badu, but a lack of clinical finishing prevented them from finding an equaliser.
Speaking after the match, Björkegren praised his players’ overall performance, particularly their defensive organisation and ability to create chances against a strong Cameroonian side.
“I still believe a lot in this group, and we know that we have a strong defense. I mean, the only way to score against us is with a penalty, more or less, right now. And we just need to take care of our chances,” he said.
The Swedish coach said Ghana had shown enough quality to compete at the tournament and believed the team’s attacking output was encouraging.
“It shows that we’re doing many good things. We create chances enough. We have a strong defense. If we just start to score from our chances, then it’s going to be a fun tournament,” he added.
The result leaves the Black Queens seeking a response in their remaining group matches as they aim to keep their WAFCON campaign alive.
