Ghana’s Black Princesses face a crucial test at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, as they take on South Korea with their hopes of reaching the knockout stage under pressure.
The Ghanaian side must respond strongly after a disappointing opening-day defeat to Ecuador, with a positive result against South Korea now vital to keeping their campaign alive.
The Black Princesses were beaten 3-0 by Ecuador in their Group C opener after the South Americans made a fast start and took the lead just four minutes into the game.
Rosa Flores opened the scoring with a long-range effort before Ghana came close to an immediate response, with Agnes Yeboah hitting the post.
Ecuador, however, extended their advantage in the 17th minute when Domenica Arboleda found the back of the net to put Ghana in a difficult position.
The Black Princesses suffered another setback when goalkeeper Najat Abdul Salam was forced to leave the pitch through injury, with Precious Asante coming on as her replacement.
Ghana continued to create opportunities but struggled to find a way through Ecuador’s defence and were unable to turn their attacking efforts into goals.
Arboleda completed her brace in the 69th minute to give Ecuador a commanding 3-0 victory and leave Ghana facing an early fight for survival in the group.
The Black Princesses will now need a much-improved performance against South Korea, knowing another setback could seriously damage their chances of advancing from Group C.
For Ghana, the encounter provides an opportunity to put the opening defeat behind them and reignite their campaign with a strong showing against the Asian side.
