Ghana’s senior women’s national football team, the Black Queens, are ramping up preparations for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with two crucial international friendlies against Côte d’Ivoire.
The first encounter is set for Friday, May 30, at the iconic Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny in Abidjan at 19:00 GMT, with the return leg scheduled for June 3, 2025. These friendlies are part of the team’s strategic buildup toward the continental tournament in Morocco, which kicks off on July 5.
Head coach Kim Lars Björkegren expressed satisfaction with the team’s form and attitude during their final training session before the opening match. Despite having just one session following their arrival in Abidjan, the Swedish coach commended the players for their sharpness and high energy levels.
“It was a good exercise, and I liked the intensity and commitment everyone exhibited today,” Björkegren said. “I’m impressed with the focus from the team even after a short recovery time.”
The two matches against “Les Éléphants” of Côte d’Ivoire are expected to test the readiness of the Black Queens and provide tactical insights ahead of the continental showdown in July. The Ghanaian side is aiming to return to the top tier of African women’s football and mount a strong challenge for the WAFCON title.
