Ghana’s Black Satellites saw their hopes of advancing to the FIFA U-20 World Cup Chile 2025 dashed after a dramatic penalty shootout loss to Egypt in the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals at Suez Stadium.
The match, which ended 2-2 in regulation time, saw the Black Satellites miss out on a chance to secure one of Africa’s coveted slots for the world tournament, with Egypt emerging victorious 5-4 in the penalty shootout.
The Black Satellites, four-time winners of the U-20 AFCON, entered the game as heavy favorites after an impressive group stage campaign, where they topped Group C. Despite their dominant group-stage performance, Ghana’s defense proved to be their undoing in this encounter.
Coach Desmond Offei’s side faced early pressure from Egypt, who capitalized on Ghana’s defensive lapses. In the 19th minute, Ghana captain Ofori McCarthy’s poor clearance set up Momen Sherif, who made no mistake in scoring from close range. Just eight minutes later, another defensive blunder allowed Momen Sherif to double Egypt’s lead with a simple tap-in, making it 2-0.
As the first half progressed, Ghana began to show signs of recovery. In the 43rd minute, Phenyin Dennis Marfo’s powerful shot was cleared off the line by the Egyptian defense, but Ghana didn’t have to wait long to get on the scoreboard. Right before the break, Issah struck a brilliant shot that found the back of the net, giving Ghana a much-needed lifeline going into the second half.
The second half saw the Black Satellites dominating possession, but Egypt’s resolute defense kept them at bay. On the half-hour mark, Dennis Marfo had a header saved by Egypt’s Abdelmomen Tamer, while the Egyptians continued to defend with composure.
Ghana’s pressure finally paid off in the dying moments of the match when Sulemana converted a penalty in second-half injury time, sending the game into extra time. The Black Satellites pushed for a winner, with Hayford Adu Boahen coming close with a long-range shot, but Tamer was equal to the task, saving the attempt.
With the match still tied at 2-2 after extra time, the game was decided by penalties. Despite a red card for Aaron Essel in the second half of extra time, Ghana couldn’t hold their nerve in the shootout. Egypt triumphed 5-4, securing their place at the FIFA U-20 World Cup and sending Ghana home.
The defeat marks a disappointing exit for the Black Satellites, who had high hopes of extending their legacy on the world stage but will now have to watch from the sidelines as Egypt and other African nations prepare for Chile 2025.
