Ghana’s journey at the FIFA World Cup has come to an end after a hard-fought 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32 at Kansas City Stadium.
The Black Stars were unable to recover from an early setback as Jhon Arias scored the only goal of the match in the 14th minute, finishing off a cross from Luis Suárez to send the South Americans into the Round of 16.
Ghana’s plans were disrupted even before the goal when defender Marvin Senaya was forced off through injury after just 13 minutes. Alidu Seidu replaced him, but moments later Colombia capitalised on a defensive lapse to take the lead.
The Black Stars gradually settled into the game and attempted to find an equaliser, enjoying spells of possession and pressing Colombia’s defence. However, the South Americans remained disciplined at the back, denying Ghana any clear scoring opportunities.
Goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi delivered another impressive performance between the posts, producing several crucial saves to keep Ghana in the contest, including an excellent stop to deny Johan Mojica before halftime.
Ghana continued to push forward after the break in an increasingly physical contest that saw several players cautioned. Despite their determination, the Black Stars struggled to break down Colombia’s organised defence, while the South Americans controlled possession to see out the victory.
The defeat brings Ghana’s World Cup campaign to a close after the Black Stars advanced from the group stage as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams. Colombia, meanwhile, progress to the Round of 16, where they will face Switzerland in their next fixture.
