Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare delivered a standout performance as Ghana secured a hard-fought 0-0 draw against England in their Group L encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Boston.
Facing one of the tournament favourites, the Black Stars produced a disciplined defensive display to frustrate England throughout the contest, with Asare emerging as the hero of the night after making a series of crucial saves.
England controlled possession for long periods and created several promising chances, particularly in the second half, but found Ghana’s defence difficult to break down. Asare was at his best in the closing stages when he reacted sharply to deny Bukayo Saka’s powerful effort from outside the penalty area.
The Ghanaian goalkeeper was also aided by fortune moments later when Nico O’Reilly’s header struck the crossbar, preserving the Black Stars’ clean sheet as England intensified their search for a winner.
Harry Kane, Noni Madueke and Elliot Anderson were among the England players who came close, but Ghana’s organised backline and determined defending ensured the Europeans were unable to find a breakthrough.
Although Ghana created fewer opportunities, the Black Stars remained dangerous on the counterattack through the efforts of Jordan Ayew, Antoine Semenyo and Prince Adu. However, they were unable to convert their limited chances into goals.
The match also featured several tactical battles in midfield, with both sides committing fouls to disrupt attacking moves. Ghana’s Iñaki Williams received a booking as the Black Stars worked tirelessly to contain England’s attacking threats.
Both coaches turned to their benches in search of fresh energy, but neither side could find the decisive moment needed to separate them.
The result leaves Ghana with a valuable point against one of the strongest teams in the competition and boosts confidence ahead of their remaining Group L fixtures. For England, the draw will be viewed as a missed opportunity after dominating possession and creating the better chances.
While England may lament their wastefulness in front of goal, Ghana will celebrate a resilient performance built on defensive discipline and the brilliance of Benjamin Asare between the posts.
