Borussia Dortmund midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka has officially declared for Austria, making him available for the national team’s upcoming friendly against Ghana’s Black Stars on March 27.
The 22-year-old, currently on loan from Chelsea, previously represented England at youth levels from Under-17 to Under-21 but has now chosen to represent his birth country. Born in Vienna to Nigerian parents, Chukwuemeka spent much of his childhood in England before rising through the Three Lions’ youth system.
The switch also makes him eligible to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Austria has been drawn in Group J alongside Jordan, Algeria, and defending champions Argentina.
Chukwuemeka has featured in 30 matches across all competitions this season, contributing three goals and two assists. His presence against Ghana marks the first of four international friendlies for the Black Stars as they prepare for the global tournament.
The midfielder’s decision adds depth to Austria’s squad while creating a high-profile matchup for Ghana, as they face a player familiar with both English and Austrian football systems.
