Captain Festus Yeboah Asuamah of the Ghana Army is preparing for an extraordinary 250-kilometer cycling challenge aimed at promoting cyclist safety and advocating for sustainable transport. The “Ride for Safety and Fitness 2025” will take place on Saturday, April 5, 2025, and will cover the route from Accra to Kumasi in a single day, highlighting the need for safer roads for cyclists across the country.
Set to begin at 3:00 AM from Burma Camp, Accra, the ride will cover various towns and communities before concluding at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi by 7:00 PM. The ride, which will take around 13 to 15 hours, will also be dedicated to the memory of Akpene Adzo Ahadzie, a KNUST student who tragically died in a cycling accident in 2024.
Captain Asuamah’s ride aims to raise awareness about the vulnerability of cyclists on Ghanaian roads, with a focus on the need for proper cycling infrastructure and enhanced road safety measures. Through his efforts, he hopes to foster a national conversation about integrating cycling into urban transport planning and ensuring the safety of cyclists.
“This ride is about more than just cycling; it’s about advocating for safer roads for cyclists and promoting cycling as a healthy, eco-friendly mode of transportation,” Captain Asuamah stated. “We need to continue raising awareness and push for better policies that protect cyclists.”
The ride is expected to attract support from local cyclists, government agencies, and organizations, all united in the call for safer road conditions.
