The Central Region office of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has reported remarkable progress in expanding healthcare access, exceeding its 2025 membership targets by nearly 50 percent.
Speaking at the NHIA’s 2025 Annual Performance Review Meeting in Saltpond, Acting Central Regional Director Kojo Sekyere Koi Thompson said the Authority enrolled 1.5 million people last year, surpassing the previous year’s 1,453,000 and representing 47.1 percent above the set target for the region’s population of 3,173,000.
Indigent registration also saw a significant rise, reaching 509,000—129.57 percent of the annual target of 402,000—ensuring that vulnerable populations gain access to essential health services.
“All hands must be on deck for Ghana to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030,” Mr. Thompson urged, calling on staff to strengthen teamwork, improve daily operations, and intensify membership mobilization. He further appealed for better working conditions in some district facilities and consistent reporting to enhance monitoring and decision-making.
The NHIA has reimbursed all accredited health providers as of November 2025, with the Central Region ranking among the top regions nationwide in achieving its targets.
District-level managers, including Edward Mensah, Abura-Asebu Kwamankese District Manager, encouraged staff to align their plans with the Authority’s vision and maintain strong performance in 2026.
The review meeting brought together staff from all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies, health officials, and members of the media to assess performance and strategize for continued expansion of healthcare coverage.
