Residents of Dekpor-Horme in the Ketu North Municipality are calling for urgent government intervention as recurring flooding and poor road conditions continue to disrupt daily life and threaten livelihoods in the area.
The community says the lack of a proper drainage system has left it exposed during heavy rains, with water overflow creating deep gullies, damaging homes and making movement difficult and unsafe.
Chairman of the Dekpor-Horme Youth Association, Mr Douglas Senyaglo, said the situation worsens each rainy season, forcing residents—especially schoolchildren and traders—to struggle through flooded and eroded pathways.
“Whenever it rains heavily, we are left with destroyed areas, difficult movement and damaged property. It has become a serious challenge for the entire community,” he said.
He warned that without immediate action, the flooding could further endanger lives and slow down local development.
Beyond the drainage challenges, residents are also concerned about the deteriorating condition of a key road linking Dekpor Basic School through the Market Square to the Chinese Dam Roundabout.
According to Mr Senyaglo, the road has become increasingly difficult to use, particularly during the rainy season, affecting access to markets, schools and other essential services.
He said the poor state of the road was also hurting small businesses and limiting economic activity within the community.
“The road has become a major obstacle. It affects trade and makes it hard for people to move freely, especially when it rains,” he added.
The youth leader is therefore appealing to the government and relevant authorities to prioritise the construction of durable drainage systems and the rehabilitation of the road network.
He expressed hope that addressing both challenges would improve safety, ease transportation difficulties and support economic growth in Dekpor-Horme.
