The Association of Unposted Environmental Health Officers and Assistants (AUEHOA) staged a protest on Monday at the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, demanding immediate postings and financial clearance after years of delays.
General Secretary Mr. Fred Atinga Awine highlighted that members have been left unposted since 2021, despite repeated assurances from successive governments. He warned that the prolonged delay undermines Ghana’s capacity to tackle public health crises, including recurring outbreaks of cholera, typhoid, and other preventable diseases.
The Association called for the immediate posting of all graduates from 2021 to 2025 and payment of backlog allowances owed to environmental health students and graduates. While acknowledging recent payments to current students, Mr. Awine emphasized that outstanding arrears must be settled without further delay.
Responding to the protests, Minister Ahmed Ibrahim revealed plans to recruit 2,316 graduates from over 3,000 pending since 2021. He confirmed he would present the petition to the Cabinet on December 23, urging the President to consider their inclusion in next year’s budget.
The protest underscores growing frustration among environmental health professionals and highlights the urgent need to strengthen Ghana’s public health workforce.
