A man in his 40s has died at Assin Gangan in the Assin North District after a loaded tricycle he was riding reportedly overturned on a badly deteriorated stretch of road.
The deceased, identified as Ato, was reportedly returning from his farm on Thursday with a load of firewood when the accident occurred.
A community source told the Ghana News Agency that Ato had left home around 8:00 a.m. to harvest wood from his farm.
He reportedly loaded the wood onto the tricycle, locally known as aboboyaa, after removing its bucket to create additional space for the cargo.
However, while returning home, the tricycle reportedly reached a section of the road described by residents as being in a very deplorable condition.
The vehicle allegedly lost its balance and overturned, causing the load of firewood to fall onto Ato.
The impact reportedly killed him instantly.
Residents who heard about the accident rushed into the nearby bush and assisted in retrieving his body from the scene.
The deceased was said to have worked as an information centre operator and farmer and was also the branch Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Assin North Constituency, according to a community source.
His death has reportedly left residents of Assin Gangan shocked, with concerns once again being raised about the condition of roads in the area and the risks faced by residents transporting farm produce and other loads.
At the time of filing the report, the incident had not yet been formally reported to the police, while efforts were ongoing to convey the body from the accident scene.
The circumstances surrounding the accident, including the condition of the road and the extent to which the heavy load contributed to the tricycle overturning, are expected to be established as further information becomes available.
