Commercial drivers operating from the 37 Taxi Station in Accra have suspended services on some major routes in protest against rising fuel prices and the absence of a corresponding increase in transport fares.
The affected routes include 37 to Labone and 37 to Osu, where several drivers have reportedly parked their vehicles and refused to operate until transport unions and relevant authorities announce new fare adjustments.
Drivers say the continuous increase in fuel prices, coupled with the high cost of spare parts and vehicle maintenance, has made it increasingly difficult to sustain their operations under the current fare structure.
“Fuel prices keep going up, spare parts are expensive, and yet transport fares remain the same. It is becoming very difficult for us to cope,” one driver lamented.
The action has disrupted movement for many commuters, leaving some stranded and forcing others to seek alternative means of transportation.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that some drivers who remain in operation have begun charging passengers GH¢7 on the affected routes, although transport operators insist no official fare increment has been approved.
The drivers are calling for an urgent review of transport fares, arguing that current rates no longer reflect prevailing economic realities.
Stakeholders in the transport sector are expected to engage in discussions aimed at addressing the concerns and restoring normal services on the affected routes.
