A tragic road accident on Saturday evening claimed the life of a teacher near Mempeasem village in the Krachi West Municipality of the Oti Region, raising urgent calls for stronger road safety enforcement on the busy Borae–Kete-Krachi highway.
Around 6:30 p.m., a Vision Transport bus traveling from Dambai to Wulensi fatally struck the motorbike-riding teacher, who was journeying from Gyato Akura toward Dambai. Eyewitnesses reported that the fatal collision occurred when one Vision Transport bus attempted to overtake another, resulting in the devastating impact.
In a disturbing turn, the driver, conductor, and passengers fled the scene immediately after the crash. It was not until about 8:00 p.m. that a police patrol found the victim’s body lying in a pool of blood, prompting swift investigation by local law enforcement.
The incident has sparked frustration among Mempeasem residents, who accuse commercial bus operators on this route of persistent speeding and reckless driving. “These drivers act as if road safety rules don’t exist, putting lives at serious risk,” a local lamented.
Community members are now urging authorities—including the Ghana Highway Authority, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department, and transport unions—to step up driver education and enforce strict compliance with traffic laws. Some residents warned that failure to act might provoke community-led interventions to curb the dangerous driving culture.
Meanwhile, the deceased teacher’s body remains at the Kete-Krachi morgue as investigations proceed, underscoring the urgent need to address road safety challenges in the region before more lives are lost.
