A devastating fire incident on Sunday, July 6, 2025, at Akim Swedru-Ekuase in Ghana’s Eastern Region resulted in the tragic death of 65-year-old Kwasi Duodu and the destruction of two single rooms in a mud house. The sudden blaze has not only claimed a life but also ignited concerns over fire safety within the community.
Responding swiftly to the emergency, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) team from Akim Oda, led by STNO II Sekyere, managed to extinguish the fire shortly after arriving at 15:58 hours. Despite their prompt action, the discovery of Mr. Duodu’s body highlighted the devastating consequences of such incidents.
Initial investigations by the GNFS ruled out common causes like electrical faults or gas leaks. However, the presence of matchsticks at the scene, combined with unconfirmed reports of illicit activities nearby, has led authorities to involve the Swedru Police for a more detailed inquiry.
In response to the tragedy, the GNFS has intensified its community engagement efforts, conducting fire safety education sessions aimed at equipping residents with knowledge on prevention and the critical importance of early reporting.
Local leaders and emergency services have also urged residents to remain alert, especially with the dry season approaching—a period known for heightened fire risks. Emergency contact numbers 112 and 0302772446 have been widely shared to ensure faster response times in future emergencies.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for increased vigilance and proactive safety measures to protect lives and property within the region.
