Fidelity Bank Champions Financial Sector Role in Powering Ghana’s Energy Transformation

— Calls for Sustainable Financing, Data Transparency, and Smart Energy Systems

Fidelity Bank Ghana is positioning itself at the forefront of the country’s energy transition agenda, with a strong call for closer collaboration between financial institutions, policymakers, and energy sector players to build a power system that is both sustainable and investor-friendly.

Speaking at the 2025 Business and Financial Times (B&FT) Energy Roundtable in Accra, the Deputy Managing Director for Operations and Support Functions at Fidelity Bank, Mr. Atta Yeboah Gyan, said Ghana’s energy sector challenges require innovative and transparent financing models, not temporary relief measures.

“The financial sector has a critical role to play—not only as a provider of capital but as a catalyst for accountability, efficiency, and innovation across the energy value chain,” he emphasised.

Themed “Powering Ghana Forward: Strategizing for a Self-Sustaining and Resilient Power Sector in 10 Years,” the roundtable convened energy producers, regulators, financiers, and development partners to deliberate on financing pathways for a sustainable power system.

Mr. Gyan highlighted the need for renewable and hybrid energy investments, the digitisation of revenue collection, and the expansion of smart metering systems to address inefficiencies and revenue losses. He described these as “must-do priorities” rather than policy options.

“Fixing the energy sector is not a matter of choice but a necessity for Ghana’s destiny,” he said, warning that the current system, burdened with over $3 billion in legacy debt, is locked in a “vicious cycle of inefficiencies” driven by delayed tariffs, non-payment by state entities, and a weakened Cedi.

Citing the experience of Fidelity Bank in corporate and project finance, Mr. Gyan noted that capital discipline, good governance, and transparency are indispensable for sustainable sector recovery. He referenced the Energy Sector Levies Act (ESLA) bonds, which had previously provided liquidity relief, as an example of financial innovation that could be built upon with more durable mechanisms.

Fidelity Bank, he revealed, is realigning its financing framework to support Ghana’s clean energy transition through renewable asset financing, green and blended finance tools, and ESG-linked instruments. These initiatives, he said, are designed to empower individuals and businesses to adopt cleaner, more efficient energy solutions.

“Digitisation and data transparency must be prioritised to build trust across the value chain,” he noted. “Equally important is establishing cost-reflective pricing frameworks that attract long-term capital and investor confidence.”

Concluding his remarks, Mr. Gyan reiterated Fidelity Bank’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s energy ambitions:

“At Fidelity Bank, we remain committed to powering not only homes and industries but also confidence, productivity, and growth. Together, we can build an energy sector that is not just functional, but future-ready.”

The 2025 Energy Roundtable reinforced the growing recognition that financial innovation and intersectoral collaboration are essential to achieving Ghana’s vision of a self-sustaining, resilient, and environmentally responsible energy future.
