FirstBank Ghana, in collaboration with the University of Ghana, has unveiled a new Comfort Zone on the Legon campus, a modern space designed to enhance student learning, digital access, and overall campus life.
The initiative forms part of the University’s broader strategy to create student-centred environments that support academic work, innovation, and wellbeing. The Comfort Zone is equipped with high-speed internet, group study areas, and dedicated facilities for non-resident students, with plans for an on-site snack bar to further enhance student convenience.
Speaking at the commissioning, Mr. Olusegun Alebiosu, Group CEO of FirstBank Nigeria & Subsidiaries, highlighted the bank’s commitment to nurturing Africa’s next generation of leaders. “Investing in our youth is investing in Africa’s growth. This facility will enable students to innovate, collaborate, and build skills that will drive future economic development,” he said.
Mr. Alebiosu also spoke on the digital transformation of banking, noting that while cyber risks pose challenges, digitisation presents the greatest opportunities for financial inclusion and efficiency. He further announced plans for a digital and IT hub in Ghana, where locally developed software will be deployed across the FirstBank Group, signalling a strong commitment to tech-driven growth.
The Vice-Chancellor’s office, represented by Professor Gordon Awandare, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, explained that the Comfort Zone is part of a three-pillar student experience programme, alongside the One Student, One Laptop Initiative and the Classroom Modernisation Project. He revealed that six additional Comfort Zones are under construction, supported by various corporate partners, underscoring the University’s mission to provide holistic development for its students.
“Partnerships like this are not just philanthropic—they are strategic. They empower students, promote innovation, and strengthen the brands of companies that invest in education,” Prof. Awandare stated, urging more organisations to support similar initiatives.
The Comfort Zone represents a significant step in bridging education, digital technology, and professional development, creating an environment where students can study, collaborate, and thrive in preparation for leadership roles in Ghana and beyond.
