Several schools, businesses and homes in the Akatsi South Municipality of the Volta Region have been affected by flooding following hours of heavy rainfall that began in the early hours of Monday.
The downpour, which started at about 0430 hours and persisted for several hours, submerged sections of the Tadzewu-Akatsi Road, parts of the Akatsi township, the River Tordzi area, and communities including Xavi and Avenorpedo, disrupting movement and daily economic activities.
School activities were also interrupted after floodwaters inundated a number of school compounds, while traders and other residents struggled to carry out their normal activities as roads and homes became waterlogged.
The Assembly Member for the Shell Tobacco Electoral Area, Mr Wonder Gatepe, said several houses around the Jumbos suburb of Akatsi were flooded, forcing some residents to relocate temporarily to safer locations.
He noted that the flooding had affected both residential and public facilities, creating significant inconvenience for residents across the municipality.
The Akatsi South Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr Daniel Gidi, urged residents living in flood-prone and low-lying communities, particularly along the coastal belt, to remain alert and relocate whenever rising floodwaters threatened their safety.
He also advised the public to refrain from dumping refuse into drains and waterways, stressing that blocked drainage systems continued to worsen flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.
A visit to some of the affected communities revealed floodwaters overflowing roads, restricting access to certain areas and entering homes and public institutions.
Although no casualties had been reported at the time of filing the report, NADMO said assessments were ongoing to determine the full extent of the damage caused by the flooding.
