GCB Bank PLC has reinforced its support for national sports development by donating GH¢5 million to the Black Stars as part of preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The presentation was made at a brief ceremony at the bank’s Head Office, bringing together senior officials from GCB Bank, football administrators, and representatives of government.
Board Chairman of GCB Bank, Professor Joshua Alabi, said the contribution reflects the bank’s long-standing commitment to investing in the talents and aspirations of Ghanaians, particularly in sports.
He described football as a powerful unifying force in Ghana, bringing together citizens across political, ethnic, religious, and social lines under a shared national identity.
“GCB Bank is proud to support Ghana’s participation in the FIFA World Cup 2026, a moment of great national pride and unity,” he said, adding that the donation forms part of the bank’s broader commitment to national development beyond traditional banking services.
Prof. Alabi expressed confidence that the financial support would contribute to improved preparation and help the team perform strongly at the global tournament.
Managing Director of GCB Bank, Mr. Farihan Alhassan, also highlighted the significance of the donation, noting that the Black Stars represent unity and collective ambition.
He said the bank’s intervention aligns with its mandate to strengthen national cohesion through strategic partnerships that impact society positively.
Receiving the cheque on behalf of the government, Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, expressed appreciation to GCB Bank, describing the support as timely and significant for the national team’s preparations.
He said the Black Stars carry the hopes of millions of Ghanaians, adding that partnerships such as this enhance the country’s ability to prepare adequately and compete at the highest level.
Mr. Adams also revealed that combined support from government and private sector partners, including GCB Bank, had helped secure broadcast rights for Ghana’s World Cup matches to be shown on selected media platforms.
Ghana has been drawn in Group L of the expanded 48-team tournament and will face Panama in Toronto on June 17, England in Boston on June 23, and Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.
The donation adds to growing corporate support for the Black Stars as preparations intensify ahead of the global football showpiece.
