The Ghana Education Service (GES) has interdicted two watchmen of Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School following an alleged sexual assault involving a special needs student at the school.
The two staff members have also been handed over to the Police to assist with investigations into the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident.
According to the GES, the student, who was on medication, suffered a relapse on the day of the alleged assault and required medical attention.
The Service said it was during that period that the alleged sexual assault occurred.
In a statement issued on Thursday, August 20, the GES said it had taken immediate administrative action by interdicting the two watchmen while the Police conduct further investigations.
The Service said a thorough investigation was underway to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.
It explained that the outcome of the investigations would determine the appropriate sanctions under the GES Code of Conduct and the laws of Ghana.
The GES also reminded all staff of their responsibility to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and protect the safety, dignity and wellbeing of students under their care.
Management warned that it would not tolerate any conduct that compromises the welfare and safety of students.
“Management cautions that the Service will not tolerate any conduct that compromises the safety and wellbeing of students,” the statement said.
The Service assured parents, guardians and the general public that the matter was being treated with the seriousness it deserved and that appropriate action would be taken based on the findings of the investigations.
The two watchmen remain subject to the ongoing investigation, and the allegations against them have not been determined by a court.
