In a move to deepen collaboration and strengthen institutional partnerships, the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) has paid a courtesy visit to the newly appointed Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Mr. Samuel Basintale Amadu.
Led by GAF President Charles Osei Asibey, the delegation’s visit was not only to extend congratulations to Mr. Amadu on his new role but also to reaffirm the longstanding relationship between the two organizations. Since the sport’s formal introduction in 2016, the GIS has served as a critical pillar in the development of armwrestling in Ghana.
Mr. Osei Asibey emphasized that the GIS has played a pivotal role in nurturing armwrestling talent, notably producing Edward Asamoah, the current national team captain, and Nii Otoo Larkyne, a world-class referee. He credited the GIS with helping Ghana’s armwrestling team secure an impressive 41 medals at the 2023 Africa Games.
He used the opportunity to encourage the service to scale up its commitment to sports, noting that athletic achievements can serve as powerful tools for brand enhancement and morale building within security institutions.
In response, Comptroller-General Amadu expressed gratitude for the visit and lauded GAF’s efforts in raising Ghana’s flag high on the international stage. Acknowledging the need for renewed investment in sports within the service, Mr. Amadu said, “The Ghana Immigration Service has always been sports-friendly, but we must go beyond past achievements and build a more vibrant and competitive team for the future.”
He revealed that plans are already underway to recruit fresh sporting talent into the service to revitalize its sports departments.
To commemorate the visit, the Federation presented Mr. Amadu with a symbolic medal, representing a renewed bond and commitment to shared goals between the two institutions.
The meeting was attended by high-ranking officers from GIS and key GAF figures, including Dr. Kofi Addo Agyekum (GAF Vice President), Hon. Dickson Kyere Duah (MP for Berekum West), Mr. Husseini Akueteh Addy, Mr. Godfrey Amarteifio, and Ms. Phillipina Frimpong.
