Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is seeking urgent investigations into reported xenophobic tensions involving Ghanaians in South Africa after a viral video triggered widespread public concern.
The footage, circulating widely on social media, shows a South African woman leading a group of youths in confronting a Ghanaian resident over alleged immigration violations. In the video, she is heard urging foreigners to return to their countries of origin and discouraging migration within Africa.
The incident has drawn official attention from Accra, with Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa engaging his South African counterpart, Ronald Lamola, through a phone call on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
In a statement shared on Facebook, Mr Ablakwa said the South African government has expressed concern and assured Ghana of a full investigation into the matter.
He added that South African authorities are expected to brief African diplomatic missions on the findings as part of ongoing diplomatic engagement.
Ghana’s High Commission in South Africa, led by High Commissioner Benjamin Quarshie, has also been involved in supporting affected nationals. According to the Minister, the main individual seen in the viral video has been located and is receiving consular assistance, with no reported injuries or fatalities.
Mr Ablakwa stressed that the government remains committed to protecting Ghanaians abroad while calling for calm among citizens as diplomatic processes unfold.
He further urged Pan-African solidarity, cautioning against allowing isolated incidents to undermine unity among African nations, noting that the majority of Africans continue to share strong historical and cultural bonds.
