The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has strengthened its collaboration with the Aflao Zongo community through a newly introduced Community Prevention Forum (CPF), aimed at tackling irregular border crossings and illegal migration.
Deputy Commissioner of Immigration, Mark Asamoah-Boakye, Aflao Sector Commander, said the forum was designed to foster dialogue between law enforcement and border communities, allowing residents to share concerns while supporting security operations.
The engagement brought together community leaders, including ethnic chiefs, the Chief Imam, and executives of the Muslim Motor Riders Association, to discuss how residents could assist the GIS in monitoring unapproved border routes often used by undocumented immigrants. DCOI Asamoah-Boakye noted that some immigrants arriving via these routes had unclear purposes, with some engaging in deviant behaviour or ending up destitute on the streets.
Another key concern highlighted during the meeting was the vulnerability of destitute children, who are sometimes exploited in homes, farms, or on the streets—raising both social protection and national security issues.
The CPF, explained Deputy Superintendent of Immigration Justice Kudzo Normeshie, is a strategic GIS platform that allows inclusive community participation. Stakeholders who cannot write can submit concerns via voice notes, which ensures prompt response and accountability.
Alhaji Ahmed Ismael, Chief of the Aflao Zongo, described the initiative as “timely and long overdue,” pledging the community’s support while raising concerns about alleged mistreatment of residents at border posts, particularly those traveling to Niger for seasonal work or family visits. He expressed optimism that the CPF would address these grievances and strengthen trust between the GIS and the community.
DCOI Asamoah-Boakye emphasized that the initiative is not about targeting any group but building a shared platform for fairness, lawful conduct, and enhanced border security. The partnership signals a renewed focus on inclusive strategies to protect Ghana’s borders while ensuring community cooperation.
