Ghana has taken steps towards becoming a regional hub for meteorological training following the commencement of a two-day stakeholders’ workshop on the establishment of a World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Regional Training Centre (RTC) in the country.
The initiative, led by the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), is aimed at strengthening professional training and developing specialised expertise in meteorology, weather and climate services in Ghana and across the West African sub-region.
The workshop has brought together key institutions and stakeholders to discuss the proposed Centre and develop a common framework for its establishment and future operations.
According to GMet’s Communications Department, the proposed WMO-RTC would provide an important platform for enhancing the technical capacity of professionals involved in meteorological and climate-related services.
Focus on regional capacity building
The Centre is expected to support the development of local and regional expertise capable of providing reliable weather and climate information for planning, national development and informed decision-making.
GMet said the workshop would also provide an opportunity for stakeholders to identify areas for strategic partnerships and collaboration to strengthen professional training and knowledge development.
Such partnerships are expected to bring together institutions with expertise in meteorology, weather forecasting, climate services and related fields to support the effective operation of the proposed Centre.
Stakeholders to shape proposed Centre
Discussions during the workshop are expected to focus on the priorities, opportunities and practical requirements necessary to establish the WMO-RTC in Ghana.
The engagement forms part of broader efforts to enhance Ghana’s contribution to meteorological capacity development while fostering stronger cooperation among institutions working in weather, climate and related services.
If established, the Centre would further strengthen Ghana’s capacity to train professionals and support countries within the West African sub-region with specialised meteorological knowledge.
GMet said the stakeholder engagement is expected to produce a shared vision and identify practical steps towards turning the proposed regional training facility into a functioning centre for meteorological capacity development.
