In a landmark collaboration set to transform Ghana’s technology landscape, Hallmark Research Lab has partnered with the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), to establish a cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) Lab on campus. The initiative comes under Ghana’s Presidential Special Initiative on Artificial Intelligence and represents a $240 million investment over the next decade.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Hallmark Research Lab Executive Chairman, Mr. Philip Gamey, described the partnership as “the inauguration of a shared future” that will bring together the brightest minds from academia and industry to explore uncharted AI territories.
“AI is reshaping industries, redefining how we work, live, and interact in the world,” Mr. Gamey noted. “Through this Lab, we aim to unlock AI’s full potential ethically and effectively, making Ghana a competitive player in global AI innovation.”
The AI Lab will not only drive research and technological breakthroughs but also address pressing workforce challenges, including labor substitution. The initiative is expected to redesign jobs, create higher-earning employment opportunities, and equip Ghanaians with skills to thrive in emerging AI-driven sectors.
Minister of State in Charge of Special Initiatives, Mr. Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, highlighted the inevitability of AI in shaping Ghana’s future. “AI has come to stay. It is a vast space, and we must embrace it to create jobs and opportunities for our people,” he said.
Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, Vice-Chancellor of UPSA, welcomed the partnership, emphasizing its potential to strengthen academic research, expand IT capabilities, and provide state-of-the-art facilities for faculty and students alike.
The Hallmark-UPSA AI Lab promises to accelerate scientific discovery, drive innovation across healthcare, finance, education, and other sectors, and position Ghana as a leading hub for AI development on the African continent.
